The Maryland Statewide Independent Living Council (SILC) is dedicated to promoting the Independent Living philosophy and advocating for the rights and needs of people with disabilities across Maryland. The SILC works to empower individuals with disabilities to achieve their full potential and live self-determined lives within their communities.

Position Summary:

The Director’s Assistant provides crucial administrative, coordination, and project support to the Executive Director, enabling the effective administration and execution of all Maryland SILC activities. This role requires a highly organized, proactive, and detail-oriented individual with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and a commitment to the principles of Independent Living. The Director’s Assistant will work closely with the Executive Director, staff, and stakeholders to ensure the smooth operation of the SILC and the advancement of its mission.

Responsibilities:

  • Administrative Support: 
  • Manage the Executive Director’s calendar, schedule appointments, and coordinate meetings, including logistics and materials preparation.
  • Prepare and edit correspondence, reports, presentations, and other documents.
  • Maintain organized electronic and paper filing systems.
  • Handle phone calls, emails, and other communications, ensuring timely and professional responses.
  • Arrange travel and accommodations for the Executive Director.
  • Process expense reports and other administrative paperwork.
  • Order and maintain office supplies.
  • Coordination and Project Support: 
  • Assist in the coordination and tracking of policy and program development initiatives.
  • Support the Executive Director in the leadership and oversight of SILC legislative and advocacy efforts, including scheduling meetings with legislators and preparing relevant materials.
  • Assist with membership recruitment efforts, including maintaining databases and coordinating outreach activities.
  • Support public relations activities, including drafting social media posts, website updates, and other communications as directed.
  • Assist in the coordination of meetings for the SILC Executive Committee and other committees, including preparing agendas, distributing materials, and taking minutes.
  • Support the management of paid SILC staff by assisting with scheduling, communication, and other administrative tasks as needed.
  • Assist in budget management by processing invoices, tracking expenses, and preparing financial reports under the direction of the Executive Director.
  • Provide support for other priorities identified by the Maryland SILC Executive Committee.
  • Communication and Stakeholder Relations: 
  • Serve as a point of contact for internal and external stakeholders, including individuals with disabilities, community partners, and government agencies.
  • Maintain positive and professional relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Disseminate information effectively and efficiently.
  • Independent Living Philosophy: 
  • Understand, embrace, and promote the Independent Living philosophy in all aspects of the role.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to advocating for the rights and needs of people with disabilities.
  • Other Duties: 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent experience in a related field. Bachelor’s degree or Lived Experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of administrative support experience, preferably in a non-profit or advocacy organization.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with a proven ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including excellent grammar and proofreading abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and other relevant software.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.   
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with discretion.   
  • A strong understanding of and commitment to the Independent Living philosophy and the rights of people with disabilities is highly desirable.
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities is a plus.

Salary will be commensurate with experience.
